The priority of any EMS system is to deliver quality patient care in the briefest period of time following injury, regardless of system design or level of care. Wide variation exists in the level and skill of treatment provided in the pre-hospital setting . Pre-hospital medicine typically consists of two levels of care: basic life support (BLS) and advanced life support (ALS).
For trauma care, basic skills include airway management (eg, maneuvers to open an airway, oral and nasal airway adjuncts, and bag-mask ventilation), cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillation, hemorrhage control, and fracture and spine immobilization. Emergency medical technicians can provide these services.
No two emergencies are exactly alike. Again and again rescue workers have to find their way through and difficult situations while under great pressure.
